HISTORIC BUILDING AND RESTORATION TECHNIQUES
ACHS Hands-On History Event

Allegany County Historical Society will be hosting our third 2023 Hands-On History event on May 20th at the Gordon Roberts House. “Historical Building and Restoration Techniques,” will be presented by Benjamin Curran, Historic Trades Curriculum Developer for The Campaign for Historic Trades, a national program of the statewide nonprofit Preservation Maryland. The organization harnesses the power of historic places by revitalizing and reinvesting in communities, advocating, and building the historic trades workforce for the benefit of all Marylanders.
Beginning at 11 AM with a 30-minute break for lunch, the event will take 4 ½ hours including the break. The workshop will involve a power point presentation, a tour of the basement and exterior to show participants how a home ages over time, and what to watch for in terms of degradation. The day will conclude with hands-on activities to demonstrate raking out joints, mixing mortar, and properly repointing mortar.

As with previous 2023 Hands-On History events, participation is free of charge, limited to the first 25 individuals who make reservations at the link below. Participants can choose to pre-purchase bag lunches at the registration link or are welcome to bring their own bag lunch and are encouraged to dress in anticipation of basement exploration and masonry work.
